Then I thought maybe this would work as a pillow cover. So at $3.99 each I took one home to experiment. I used tweezers to pull the stitching apart in the corner and made a hole about 3 inches wide. I only used tweezers because I didn't have scissors that are small enough to cut the stitching.
Next I cut open an old pillow I had stashed away and I transferred the stuffing to the new place mat pillow. Then I just hand stitched the hole back together. I actually was able to go into the small holes that were already there. The end result looked good. so I ran out and bought a second place mat and did the same thing.

And that's how I got two new pillows for only $8. Now I just need to find like 5 more that complement these!
